The Glow of 12x Optical RAM Writing

When you read about the 12x DVD-RAM support available from I/O Data's DVR-ABM16G, realize that it represents a major bump up in DVD-RAM writing performance compared to the previous 5x speed these drives supported. Think of it... the new 12x speed leapfrogs DVD+RW's 8x and lands close to DVD+R's current 16x max speed --which will probably remain the max for that media for the foreseeable future.

On the other hand, despite this major improvement, keep in mind that DVD-RAM is, in general, a bit of a niche market. And while it's always had its fanatic supporters, it has never enjoyed the popularity of its other optical brethren that are typically used for music and video. DVD-RAM fans do, however, point the advanatge of having an error checking process during writing that insures a more accurate backup than with conventional opticl media. DVD-RAM also boasts a 100,000 rewrite life which is more durable than other media.

Of course, DVD-RAM users have previously needed patience while they wait to achieve a great write; now, at 12x, they can be impatient like the rest of us.
