Pentium 955 Extreme One Hot Chip?
There are rumors floating around that Intel's new dual core Pentium 955 Extreme Edition processor has a heat problem. I can't confirm that. What I can note is that the combination of an Intel 955EE and Intel's current iteration of its D975XBX motherboard (which I assume constitutes the majority of CPU/MBD combos available to the press at this point) has a heat problem --an annoying one.
According to Intel's Desktop Utilities, the processor I have idles at 140 degrees and runs closer to 190 degrees, at which point it often shuts down. It also has a unexpected shut-down problem when left to idle for extended periods of time.
So far, Intel says the problem is the motherboard and heatsink/fan combination. It will be replacing those items for me, in theory at least, some time this week. At that point I'll be able to comment better on what's happening.
