Not Even They Can Get It To Work

I was a little surprised to see that even over at ExtremeTech, when they built their new home theater pc, they went with Windows Media Center Edition. After all, they did get MythTV working last year. In fact, they even came up with their own custom Linux distro that was supposed to make it easier to get MythTV working.

I think that easier is a relative term. I tried it earlier this week. Unless you're a video maven, and a Linux expert, it's simply kind of hopeless. The setting screens, which were so many I lost count, were somewhere between arcane and cryptic. I thought like I was trying to solve a Da Vinci code puzzle rather than setting up a computer. This MythTV is clearly above the heads of most users out there. Even those with enough expertise (and time) to get this all set up, it's probably better spent on something else anyway. While the interface is slick, I never got to it anyway.

This is exactly what gave me cold feet about the Myth TV project. I'm not very Linux saavy and did not want to fight two battles, Myth TV and Linux. Plus I have some reservations about NVidia - couldn't figure out their web page and couldn't decide what card to buy.

I thin you need to be very Linux savvy to even think about MythTV. It's a shame as the screenshots look great.

The 6200 cards from nVidia are fanless and well suited to home theater pc applications.
