Note To Microcenter- Stock Your Shelves!

After way too much research, my plan was to get my desktop running again with a Gigabyte mATX motherboard, and a Pentium D 915 processor. The idea was to reuse the memory and AGP graphics card, and to rejuvenate my desktop for around $150 (more like raise the dead).

Well, I made it to Microcenter today, and it was a wasted trip, to say the least. Not only did they not have the motherboard, but they were also out of the processor! I guess I should have expected it due to the fact that it was the Tuesday after a three day holiday weekend, and they didn't get a truck yet for the week. Well, let's just say I didn't leave a happy customer. I walked out empty handed as I had already decided on what I wanted to purchase before I ventured out.

Even with their current 20% off sale, their prices compared to online retailers are roughly the same anyway. I can find the motherboard online, but curiously, no one has the Pentium D 915 processor. This is kind of curious, and makes me wonder if Intel is even making them anymore! While I can get a Pentium D 805, 820, or 830, I've heard too many reports of this line running too hot, and besides, it's taking yet another half a step in the wrong direction from current processors.

Needless to say, I'm starting with another blank sheet of paper, and we're back to planning...

At the top of the list is "Core 2 Duo." While the processor may set me back $200, having a great desktop will be "priceless" at this point. Some things are worth using your credit card for!

PS: Stay tuned, this will end at some point.
